Today is Greenpeace Day around the world but we want to begin by shouting from the rooftops that this is not a ‘worthy’ article here to name and shame individuals and organisations about what more they should be doing, that’s not even close to what we’re about. Instead, this is a simple update on the world we live in because we all need to get our info from somewhere, right?
We’ve all heard about Greenpeace over the years but not always in much detail, so, in their own words
‘we defend the natural world and work for a green and peaceful future’.
Sounds good right?
And with barely a day going by without stories across social media, in the news or even your neighbour over the fence talking about climate change, today is a great opportunity to check in and really understand what it means and means for you.
A great place to start is by looking at what challenges we’re facing today…
- Climate change
- Plastic pollution
- Air pollution
- Air travel
…and that’s just the beginning – but these few are where we can all make an impact simply by making small changes to the way we…, wait for it… shop! (Hardly a chore!). And the best bit is, the hard work has already been done for you! Independent brands, retailers, makers and market stall holders across the country are committing to ethical sources and even to make and source in Britain meaning less air pollution flying materials and products around the world. All you need to do is take a leisurely wander down your local high street instead of looking further afield… you might be surprised at what you can find! A few other benefits to shopping local:
- You’ll be helping reduce postage including excess packaging
- By taking your own reusable bag you’re helping to reduce the use of plastic
- Local zero waste shops mean you take your own jars and containers meaning zero waste when you refill
